Free Outdoor Navigation Skills Workshop: June 13, 2015 (Deadline for registration: April 30, 2015.)

CORE is partnering with Camp Chief Hector YMCA to provide a free Outdoor Navigation Skills Workshop for interested CORE members on June 13, 2015. The maximum number of participants will be 24 however, once full, we will take names for a wait list in case of any cancellations. The workshop will take place starting at the Yamnuska parking lot west of the city, and will be led by qualified outdoor instructors.

Please send an email to the Executive Trip Coordinator at d.bloem@shaw.ca (subject: Outdoor Navigation Skills Workshop) if you’re a member and are interested in participating the workshop. It will be a very full day from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. not including our travel time from our city departure point.

Our main topic, around which everything else will connect: Building a Route Summary, using backstops, handrails and markers.

  • Map reading – Corresponding map reading to the land
  • Map data, including the norths (grid, true and magnetic)
  • Declination
  • Latitude and Longitude and grid reference
  • Notes about contour lines
  • Compass: (a) orienting a map (b) resections (c) walking on a bearing (“white-out” conditions)
  • Aiming off
  • Using the terrain efficiently
  • Using published resources and logbooks
  • The difficulty of trailhead trails, cut-lines and old roads
  • Off trail travel and “hitch-hiking” on animal trails
  • GPS (basic – obtaining grid reference and lat-long and go-to)

The workshop will be funded by the Branko Peterman Education Endowment Fund.
