<\/a>AUGUST ACTIVITY SCOREBOARD<\/h1>\n

August was another stellar month for club activities, if you overlook the forest fire smoke. There were 26 events posted on the calendar, including urban walks, cycle trips, dinner and movie outings, scrambles and hikes of various levels of difficulty, including several hikes on the Fernie camping weekend.<\/p>\n

CORE members are encouraged to take photos along the trail and post a selection of them on the CORE photo album. This helps older members of the club remember where they\u2019ve been <8} , and encourages others to try out some of the exciting activities our club offers. If any members need some help in figuring out the photo album posting steps, please contact the CORE webmaster or the Communication Coordinator. <\/a>AUGUST CLUB MEETING<\/h1>\n

Our monthly club meeting was held on Tue Aug 25 at the <\/strong>Scarboro Community Centre. This month\u2019s presenter was Cliona, who gave us as a wonderful account of her trip to Ireland this past summer. Thanks again Cliona. You made that South West coast of the Emerald Isle appear so terribly inviting and immensely historic. (Hyperbole intended, but we DID enjoy your presentation).<\/p>\n

<\/a>Friends of Kananaskis Country – Volunteer Call Out!<\/em><\/h2>\n

Friends of Kananaskis Country is looking for help with the High Rockies Trail maintenance.<\/p>\n

Date:<\/strong> Sunday, September 13th<\/p>\n

Meeting time:<\/strong>\u00a09:00am\u00a0(9:00am – 4:00pm)<\/p>\n

Meeting location: <\/strong>Sparrowhawk Day Use<\/a><\/p>\n

Trans Canada Hwy (Hwy 1)\u00a0to Canmore, South on Hwy 742 Spray Lakes \u2013 Smith Dorrian Rd to the Sparrowhawk Day Use Area<\/p>\n

What to expect:<\/strong>\u00a0Light to moderate level work. The project involves decommissioning ~400-500m of the existing trail from Spray Lakes Road up toward the Sparrowhawk Tarns. A new trail route that is slightly less steep has already been constructed and the project with Friends volunteers simply involves using hand tools to loosen the compacted old trail tread, placing rocks and logs across the old trail, and other miscellaneous tasks to rehabilitate the old trail.<\/p>\n

What to bring:<\/strong> You’ll need to wear hiking boots and bring work gloves (Friends of Kananaskis\u00a0work gloves will be available), rain gear (hopefully not needed), along with your lunch, water, sunscreen, bug spray, bear spray,\u00a0and other personal gear. All of the tools and\u00a0equipment will be supplied.<\/p>\n

This group meets once a month to resolve any issues that may arise during the year, set policies (like car pool rates), plan parties (like the Christmas Party in November), ensure hikes are being conducted safely, organize safety courses (like Avalanche Awareness and Bear Safety) and generally ensure that club activities live up to the Club Mission Statement.<\/p>\n

<\/a>CORE\u2019s Mission Statement<\/em><\/h2>\n

\u201cTo provide a welcoming cohesive organization within which adult members can participate in the responsible enjoyment of outdoor recreation, primarily hiking.\u00a0 Members participating in group activities shall be cooperative, safety-conscious and committed to group participation;\u00a0originality, initiative and enthusiasm are appreciated and encouraged.\u201d<\/p>\n

So with that in mind, we\u2019ll report on any significant discussions from the Executive in this section each month.<\/p>\n

<\/a>CORE Website<\/em><\/h2>\n

The Calendar email Broadcast feature is offline, and our webmaster is investigating a solution that will still allow club members who wish to be alerted to new club activity postings to be alerted via email.<\/p>\n

We also need to make a couple of tweaks to the webpage to make it mobile-friendly again.<\/p>\n

Our webmaster will keep you updated via notices above the \u201cHot On the Trails\u201d window on the CORE Home page at https:\/\/corehike.org\/<\/a><\/p>\n

We mentioned this previously, but the CORE Newsletter is now published as a Blog, and can be linked to from the CORE Home page just under the \u201cHot on the Trails\u201d window. Retired elementary physical education teacher David Peyto has written three Calgary walking guidebooks. In late September 2013 he started a walking project entitled Walk Calgary Communities.
