The maximum number of participants will be 24 however, once full, we will take names for a wait list in case of any cancellations. The workshop will take place starting at the Yamnuska parking lot west of the city, and will be led by qualified outdoor instructors.<\/p>\n<p>Please send an email to the Executive Trip Coordinator at <a href=\"mailto:d.bloem@shaw.ca\">d.bloem@shaw.ca<\/a> (subject: Outdoor Navigation Skills Workshop) if you\u2019re a member and are interested in participating the workshop. It will be a very full day from 8:30 a.m. \u2013 5:30 p.m.\u00a0<em>not<\/em> including our travel time from our city departure point.<\/p>\n<p>Our main topic, around which everything else will connect: Building a Route Summary, using backstops, handrails and markers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Map reading &#8211; Corresponding map reading to the land<\/li>\n<li>Map data, including the norths (grid, true and magnetic)<\/li>\n<li>Declination<\/li>\n<li>Latitude and Longitude and grid reference<\/li>\n<li>Notes about contour lines<\/li>\n<li>Compass: (a) orienting a map (b) resections (c) walking on a bearing (&#8220;white-out&#8221; conditions)<\/li>\n<li>Aiming off<\/li>\n<li>Using the terrain efficiently<\/li>\n<li>Using published resources and logbooks<\/li>\n<li>The difficulty of trailhead trails, cut-lines and old roads<\/li>\n<li>Off trail travel and &#8220;hitch-hiking&#8221; on animal trails<\/li>\n<li>GPS (basic &#8211; obtaining grid reference and lat-long and go-to)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The workshop will be funded by the Branko Peterman Education Endowment Fund.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Free Outdoor Navigation Skills Workshop: June 13, 2015\u00a0(Deadline for registration: April 30, 2015.)
