Best in fall for river crossing when Highwood flow is lower. Crossing is easier (In terms of handling cold water) from W end of washed out (Sentinel) day use area where river braided. Wet areas of trail will show equestrian use. Side trip to Painted Canyon is at 4 km in from start. Stone cairn marks the junction.
