Since Penstock was reportedly in poor shape for snowshoeing, switched to rte. from Sawmill. Designated/popular snowshoe rtes. tend to be packed so snowshoeing can continue. Graupel & Frost Heave were in fine shape - for spring. After driving to Chester we started snowshoeing N. from Sawmill. Plenty of open views to peaks on W. side of Smith-Dorrien. Cumulative elevation gain is 348
