Kootenai Lake, Goat Haunt-Glacier N.P,Montana Kootenai Lake, Goat Haunt area,Glacier Natl. Park, Montana. Easy Backpack - 4km one way, 60m gain)Fish,Explore, Wildlife Viewing (Moose),Relax. Optional dayhike to Porcupine Ridge Fire Lookout, Extra Difficult - 8km return,1000m gainOne night in the backcountry. Backpack in to beautiful Kootenai Lake for one night, lots of choices for exploration in this area such as excellent fishing, wildlife viewing (best moose area)dayhiking or just relax by the lake. We will take the 10:00 AM boat down to Goat Haunt so there is a fee, for return trip is $34.00 and each person will require a passport as we will need to check into the backcountry ranger & border customs office. Once we set up camp it is each person's choice as to what they want to do, I am planning a hike up to the Porcupine Ridge Fire Lookout, the hike up to the Lookout is very difficult and steep and may involve some bushwhacking and routefinding, this lookout was abandoned from the Second World War up until 2003 when the govt. decided it was necessary to rebuild and "re-man" it. If I and whoever wishes to come with me make it to the top it offers spectacular views of the peaks in Goat Haunt area (i.e. Mt. Clevland -highest peak in Glacier at 10,466ft). I will need to know what each participants intentions are when you register. Distance to Kootenai Lake is 4 km one way, 60 m gradual gain, reserved for 8 participants. The Porcupine Ridge Fire Lookout hike may require an ice axe/rock helmet, I will notify participants accordingly. The backcountry camping fee is $5.00 US per person.
