One participant ski club only. Needed to start late from Calgary in order to have lunch closer to lunch time (approx noon to 1:30)
GOURMET LUNCH HIKE: CASTLE LOOKOUT (M): On the way to the trailhead we'll stop in at Banff's Bison Mountain General Store to pick up a gourmet sandwich - check the website for the store offerings. The relatively short but steep trail up the slopes of Castle Mountain leads to the site of the old fire lookout (where we'll have lunch) and an outstanding panorama of the Bow Valley between Banff and Lake Louise. A cabin, possibly remaining from the mining boom in the 1880's, is on the way. The old fire lookout was burned down. Return distance is 8 km, elevation gain 520 m. Mtg. place is Edworthy Park, N. side of river, E. end of parking lot.
