UPDATE!!!!! AS OF 7/23/08 - GREAT NORTHERN TRAVERSE-WEST, GLACIER NATL. PARK, MONTANA (BACKPACK)-XD (CHANGED FROM MODERATE): DUE TO 100% SNOW COVER AT BOULDER PASS ONLY THOSE PARTICIPANTS EQUIPPED WITH ICE AXE AND CRAMPONS AND THE ABILITY TO USE THEM WILL BE ALLOWED ON THIS TRIP, THEREFORE, BECAUSE OF THE SNOW HAZARD AT BOULDER PASS THIS TRIP WILL BE EXTRA-DIFFICULT, THIS TRIP IS STILL OPEN TO MOST LEVELS OF BACKPACKING BUT PLEASE BE WARNED THAT IF YOU SIGN UP AND SHOW UP WITHOUT THE PROPER SNOW SAFETY EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE. Seven day backpack August 3 to 9 encompassing the western portion of the Great Northern Traverse route starting and ending at Waterton Townsite. Distance is 64.5 km return with boat shuttle if done over 7 days,(84 km no boat shuttle if done over 8 days) Varying and gradual daily elevation gains and losses with the highlight of staying at Lake Francis, Kootenai Lakes, Hole in the Wall and Boulder Pass campsites. Passport or other appropriate ID required as it does require passing thru customs at Goat Haunt (Class B port). Proper backpacking gear required. This trip is suitable for any backpacking level and for beginners who wish to experience multliday backpacking however beginner backpackers should have done a least a couple of overnite trips first before registering for this trip.
