4-5 trees across path due to trail crew not yet there. Otherwise a grat day. Due to record sonwfall tunnels were not open yet. Leisurely lunch. 30C and clear. Some packed snow pockets in shaded area.
PTARMIGAN TUNNEL/ICEBERG LAKE, GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, MONTANA: Distance: 24 km return<bR>Elevaton Gain: 800 m combined<bR>CORE Rating: Difficult<bR>Two hikes in one!!! Hike along Altyn Peak with glorious views of the Ptarmigan Wall, Swiftcurrent Pass and Mt. Wilbur. Beautiful scenic trail with a steady moderate ascent to Ptarmigan Lake/Tunnel, on the return trip we will make an easy detour to Iceberg Lake before heading back. This is a long day, pack plenty of water and food. No sandals,runners or trail running shoes allowed. Be prepared for cool temps at Ptarmigan Lake and near freezing temps at the tunnel - ie. bring toque,mitts,etc.Also gaitors highly recommended if you have them. Be prepared for possible snow on switchbacks up to the tunnel, we will go through the tunnel if the doors are opened early for stunning views into the Belly River Valley. Meet at 8:45 am at the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn by the veranda (deck) Alternate hike will be Cracker Lake if this trail is closed. There are other options to extra hiking if all participants who have registered for this hike have hiked the Iceberg Lake on Saturday (the day before).<bR>Cracker Lake Distance: 10 km one way (20 Km return)<bR>Elevation Gain: 500 m<bR>CORE RATING: Moderately Difficult<bR>
